California Road Trip: Funny Jeep Gladiator Road Trip

California Road Trip: Funny Jeep Gladiator Road Trip

Meet Our Silent Travel Companion

Every great road trip needs a dependable travel companion. Ours just happens to never ask for a restroom break, never complains about the music, and has absolutely no opinion on where we stop for dinner.

Meet our mannequin.

During our cross-country road trip, our bright blue Jeep Gladiator gained an unusual passenger whenever we stayed overnight at hotels. Sitting in the driver’s seat was what looked like a person wearing a red hoodie. The “head” was actually a pillow covered by the hoodie, topped with a white mask. Behind the eye openings was reflective foil that caught any nearby light, making it look like someone was quietly watching from inside the Jeep.

It was impossible not to laugh every time we parked for the night.

People would walk by, slow down, do a double take, and then keep looking as if they were trying to figure out whether someone was actually sitting in the Jeep. Some would even glance back over their shoulder just to make sure their eyes weren’t playing tricks on them.

One evening, a hotel staff member approached us with a puzzled look and asked about the “person” sitting in the driver’s seat. They had noticed that whoever was inside hadn’t moved for quite some time and wanted to make sure everything was okay. We couldn’t help but laugh as we explained that our mysterious guest wasn’t a guest at all—it was our mannequin security guard.

On several nights, especially in larger cities, we noticed transients walking through hotel parking lots after dark. While our Jeep was already protected with motion detection and a 24-hour dash camera, the mannequin added another layer of security—not because it could actually stop anyone, but because it created uncertainty. From a distance, it looked like someone might still be sitting inside the vehicle, making anyone thinking about snooping around pause and move on.

Was it foolproof? Of course not.

Was it entertaining? Absolutely.

Every morning we’d walk out to the parking lot wondering how many people had spent the previous evening trying to figure out whether our “driver” was asleep, waiting for someone, or simply staring into space. Judging by the number of second glances and confused expressions, our silent passenger was getting plenty of attention.

The mannequin never complained about the long miles, never needed coffee, and was always ready to stand guard while we slept. I’d say that’s a pretty good road trip companion!

Sometimes the best memories from a road trip aren’t the famous landmarks or scenic overlooks—they’re the unexpected little moments that make you laugh for years afterward. Our mysterious mannequin definitely earned its place among those unforgettable travel memories.

California Road Trip: Blythe, CA

California Road Trip: Blythe, CA

From Campbell to Blythe: Garlic Fields, California Farmlands, and a Desert Sunset

Leaving Campbell after a wonderful weekend with family, we began the next leg of our cross-country journey back toward Florida. Our route first took us south through Gilroy, a community proudly known as the “Garlic Capital of the World.” Gilroy produces a significant portion of the garlic grown in the United States and is famous for its annual Garlic Festival, garlic-themed shops, and restaurants featuring everything from garlic fries to garlic ice cream. Even while driving through town, it’s not uncommon to catch the distinct aroma of garlic from the surrounding processing facilities and nearby fields. It was an interesting stop and a reminder of California’s rich agricultural heritage before continuing east toward the Central Valley.

From Gilroy, we followed scenic CA-152 through rolling hills and around the beautiful San Luis Reservoir before joining Interstate 5 south. The reservoir’s sparkling blue waters provided a striking contrast against the golden California hillsides, making it one of the prettiest sections of the day’s drive. Once on I-5, the scenery opened into miles upon miles of fertile farmland. Vast fields of vegetables, orchards, vineyards, and agricultural operations stretched across the San Joaquin Valley, demonstrating why California is one of the world’s leading agricultural regions. The long drive offered a fascinating look at the farms that produce so much of the nation’s fruits, vegetables, and nuts.

As the day continued, we passed through the greater Los Angeles area by taking Interstate 210 through Pasadena and San Bernardino before connecting with Interstate 10 east. Although traffic was heavier than the quiet roads we had traveled earlier, the route provided impressive views of Southern California’s mountain ranges surrounding the metropolitan area. Before long, the landscape began changing once again as urban neighborhoods gave way to the wide-open desert of eastern California.

Our destination for the evening was the Days Inn by Wyndham Blythe in Blythe. Situated along the Colorado River near the Arizona border, Blythe has long served as a popular overnight stop for travelers crossing the desert between California and Arizona. The hotel provided a clean, comfortable room and a welcome opportunity to relax after another long day behind the wheel.

For dinner, we walked over to Garcia’s Restaurant, where we enjoyed delicious tacos and a flavorful burrito. The fresh ingredients, generous portions, and friendly service made it a perfect way to end the day before continuing our journey east the following morning.

California Trip: St. Lucy Parish, Campbell, CA

Sunday Morning Mass at St. Lucy Parish Before the Journey Home

Before beginning the long drive back toward Florida, we wanted to start the day with Sunday Mass at St. Lucy Parish in Campbell, California. It was a meaningful way to conclude our time in the San Jose area after celebrating our nephew’s wedding and exploring Northern California. The parish offered a warm and welcoming atmosphere, with parishioners greeting one another and visitors feeling right at home. Beginning the return trip with prayer and worship provided a peaceful moment of reflection before several days of driving across the country.

The church itself is beautiful, featuring a bright and inviting sanctuary that encourages quiet prayer and reflection. The celebration of the Mass was reverent and inspiring, with uplifting music, thoughtful scripture readings, and a homily that reminded us to carry our faith into everyday life—including while traveling. It was comforting to celebrate the Eucharist with a local parish community hundreds of miles from home, yet still experience the familiar traditions of the Catholic Church.

As we left St. Lucy Parish and began the journey east, we reflected on the many blessings we had experienced throughout our trip—from breathtaking national parks and scenic coastlines to time spent with family celebrating a joyful wedding. Our visit to St. Lucy Parish served as a fitting conclusion to our California stay, allowing us to thank God for safe travels and pray for His continued protection on the thousands of miles that still lay ahead. For travelers visiting the Campbell or San Jose area, St. Lucy Parish is a welcoming place to attend Mass and begin the next chapter of your journey with faith and gratitude.

California Road Trip: Testarossa Winery

California Road Trip: Testarossa Winery

From Santa Cruz to a Family Celebration at Testarossa Winery

After spending the morning exploring California’s beautiful coastline, we returned to the Residence Inn San Jose Campbell to get ready for one of the main reasons for our cross-country journey—our nephew’s wedding. Once dressed for the occasion, we made the short drive to Testarossa Winery in the charming town of Los Gatos. Nestled in the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains, the winery provided a beautiful and elegant setting for such a special family celebration.

Testarossa Winery combines award-winning wines with a fascinating history that dates back more than a century. Although the Testarossa label was founded in 1993 by Rob Jensen and Diana Jensen—who began making wine as a hobby in their Silicon Valley garage—the winery is housed in the historic Novitiate Winery in Los Gatos. The original stone winery was built in 1888 by Jesuit Fathers and Brothers from Santa Clara College (now Santa Clara University) to produce altar and fortified wines for the seminary. Wine has been continuously produced at this location for well over a century, making it one of California’s oldest continuously operating wineries.

Walking through the beautiful stone buildings and landscaped grounds, it was easy to appreciate the blend of California history and modern winemaking. The original cellars, historic architecture, and peaceful courtyards created an unforgettable atmosphere for the wedding ceremony and reception. Whether you are visiting for a wine tasting, a private event, or simply to explore its rich history, Testarossa Winery offers a unique experience that reflects both California’s winemaking heritage and the innovation of Silicon Valley.

Watching our nephew begin this new chapter of his life in such a beautiful setting made the day even more meaningful. Surrounded by family, friends, and the timeless charm of Testarossa Winery, it became one of the most memorable moments of our entire Florida-to-California road trip. Even if you are not attending a special event, Testarossa Winery is well worth a visit for its outstanding wines, remarkable history, and one of the most picturesque settings in the San Jose and Los Gatos area.

From Shark Fin Cove to Lighthouse Field State Beach: Surfing and Coastal Views in Santa Cruz

Leaving Shark Fin Cove, we continued south along California’s spectacular Highway 1 toward Lighthouse Field State Beach. The drive itself was part of the adventure, with breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean, rugged coastal cliffs, and waves crashing against the shoreline around nearly every bend. Before long, the scenery transitioned from the quiet coastline near Davenport to the vibrant beach atmosphere that makes Santa Cruz one of California’s most popular seaside destinations.

Lighthouse Field State Beach is well known for its historic lighthouse, scenic walking trails, and incredible ocean overlooks. From the bluffs, we watched surfers patiently waiting for the perfect wave before paddling into the rolling Pacific swells. It was fascinating to watch surfers of all skill levels riding the waves while others floated beyond the breakers waiting for their next opportunity. The relaxed beach atmosphere, ocean breeze, and panoramic coastal views made it easy to spend time simply enjoying the scenery.

Looking farther down the coastline, we could see the iconic Santa Cruz Wharf stretching out into Monterey Bay. The historic wharf is lined with restaurants, shops, and attractions, making it one of Santa Cruz’s most recognizable landmarks. From Lighthouse Field State Beach, the combination of surfers in the foreground, the wharf in the distance, and the endless Pacific Ocean created one of the most memorable coastal views of our California trip.

The short drive from Shark Fin Cove to Lighthouse Field State Beach offered a perfect combination of dramatic coastal scenery and classic California beach culture. Watching surfers carve through the waves while overlooking the Santa Cruz Wharf captured everything we had hoped to experience along the Northern California coast. For anyone visiting the San Jose or Santa Cruz area, this scenic route is well worth adding to your travel itinerary.
